A puppy meeting new people and places with its owner

Socialization isn’t about making your puppy meet everyone. It’s about teaching them that the world is a safe, interesting place, so the doorbell, the vacuum, a child on a bike or a vet visit don’t feel scary later.

Why the timing matters

In the first three months of life, a puppy’s curiosity outweighs fear. What they meet calmly in that window tends to feel normal for life. After it, new things are more likely to worry them. Studies of early socialization link positive experiences in these weeks with fewer fear and behavior problems in adult dogs.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends safe socialization before puppies are fully vaccinated, because waiting means missing the window. It notes that puppies can start socialization classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks, with at least one set of vaccines 7 days before the first class and a first deworming. Ask your vet what’s sensible where you live.

Frequently asked questions

When is it too late to socialize a puppy?

The first three months matter most, but it's never too late to help a dog feel more comfortable. Older puppies and adults just need more time and more care.

Does socialization mean meeting lots of dogs?

No. It means calm, positive experiences with people, sounds, places, surfaces and handling, as well as a few friendly, vaccinated dogs. Quality beats quantity.

Should I take my puppy to the dog park?

Not yet. Dog parks are busy, unpredictable and full of dogs whose health you don't know. Choose controlled meetings and puppy classes instead.
