How to train your dog at home
No class, no special equipment: just treats, five minutes and a plan. Here's how to set up and what to do in your first week.

Training at home works. Your dog learns best where they’re relaxed, from the person they live with, in short sessions that fit your day. You don’t need a big yard or fancy equipment: you need a few tools, a quiet spot and a plan.
What you need
- Treats: small, soft, tasty. Cut them pea-sized. See training treats.
- A marker: a short word like “Yes!” or a clicker.
- A leash and harness or collar for walking practice.
- A mat or bed to teach settling.
- A treat pouch or pocket, so rewards are fast.
Frequently asked questions
Can I train my dog myself?
Yes. Most everyday training, from sit to loose-leash walking, can be done at home with rewards and a plan. Get a professional for aggression, bites or severe fear.
How many times a day should I train my dog?
Two or three short sessions of about five minutes work well for most dogs, plus small moments of practice during the day.
What treats should I use for training?
Small, soft and tasty: pea-sized pieces your dog loves. Save the very best ones for hard things like recall outdoors.
