Summer Safety

Hot days are risky for dogs, who cool down mainly by panting. Plan walks for the cool parts of the day, carry water, and know the signs of overheating. Flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs, puppies and seniors need extra care.

If you see heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums or wobbling, start cooling your dog and call a vet. See heatstroke in dogs.

Before you go

  • The 5-second test: if the sidewalk is too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for paws
  • Walk early morning and late evening
  • Carry water and a bowl

Heatstroke signs

  • Heavy panting, thick drool, bright red gums, wobbling: see First aid → Heatstroke
